Kálida Barcelona: caring architecture

On May 9th, Kálida, a member of the international network of Maggie's Centres, opened in Barcelona. Located on the grounds of the Hospital de Sant Pau, just a few steps away from the day hospital, Kálida offers a comforting, positive environment where a team of professionals provide free practical, emotional, and social support to anyone affected by cancer –patients, family members and care givers alike.

Sensitively and beautifully designed by the architect Benedetta Tagliabue, the building unfolds as an open space, combining private corners with common areas.

Seeking to support this venture, bulthaup has provided part of the kitchen furniture and a large communal table that reinforces the atmosphere of shared human contact.

Maggie's Centres: a place where everyone is welcome

The nonprofit organization Maggie's Centres, founded in the UK in 1995, was born with the aim of providing support to people with cancer, along with their families and friends. To carry out this mission, the centers, built near cancer hospitals, strive to mitigate the fear, uncertainty and desolation caused by a cancer diagnosis by creating spaces of solace and calm where people can feel listened to and welcome. Architecture is particularly relevant in this process, focusing on a warm, relaxing atmosphere: "caring architecture."

In the next few weeks, we will be posting interviews with Rosy Williams –the driving force behind the Barcelona project up until its recent completion, endowed with in-depth knowledge of Maggie's Centres in the UK– and with Benedetta Tagliabue, the architect responsible for the building and the landscaping at Kálida Barcelona.
