Welcome to bulthaup johannesburg
“From our showrooms in Cape Town and Johannesburg, bulthaup works on premium private residential properties and high end development projects across Southern Africa and beyond. In addition to our projects in South Africa, successful installations in Namibia, Mauritius, Angola, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Republic of Congo place us in the unique position to serve a wide African clientele.”
Colin Lee, Managing Director of Domum Africa (Pty) Ltd.
“There is a real synergy in this country between our brand values and the South African lifestyle. Homes have so much space and light here and dining and entertainment often take center stage, with the kitchen as a real focus point.”

Contemporary Farmhouse, Franschhoek
Designer: Lisl Beresford
Franschhoek
Tucked within the rustic beauty of the Franschhoek Valley, sits an exquisite contemporary farmhouse conversion.
The kitchen has been designed with clean lines and a fresh palette to offer a perfectly quiet and uncluttered working arrangement. With the hob and prep area next to each other, one can prepare the food near the sink and bin areas and then move directly to the hob to cook. The fridge and grocery cupboard are located directly behind the prep station and the oven, steamer and warmer are directly behind the hob. I included a tea/ coffee/ breakfast station in a pocket door, which also stores crockery and glasses that are easily accessible.
Our bulthaup laminate worktop is easy to clean and water resistant. The crisp white finish has a calming effect as it sits quietly in the space, while still making a statement within the setting. The monobloc island is a sculptural piece that gives form to the space. This incredibly smooth surface envelopes the kitchen furniture to create a uniform design piece that simply takes your breath away.
Heritage Family Home, Pinelands
Designer: Ramón Casadó
Pinelands
Situated on a 1300m2 plot in the Heritage area of the historic garden city of Pinelands, this beautiful home has been featured in Elle Décor, Habitat and Real Estate magazines. An extensive re-modelling of the entire house undertaken by Domum’s Director of Design, Ramón Casadó, added a contemporary feel to a classic, original, thatched-home.
The spectacular, luxury bulthaup kitchen is the main feature of the house. Capturing the essence of a home centred around family and outdoor living, the kitchen area is covered by a glass conservatory, with steel doors and windows, bringing the outside into the eating area with its high-thatched roof, and beautiful wood floors.
Using bulthaup’s most exclusive b3 range, the kitchen features a wide island with plenty of storage on both sides and an extended breakfast bar for casual dining. The work surfaces are high-end matte laminate that is beautiful, durable and stain-resistant. The top of the range professional-level Gaggenau ovens are perfect for a passionate chef, and include an oven, a steam oven, and a warming drawer. Tall cabinets in grey aluminium contain the main integrated appliances. The Siemens fridge and Liebherr freezer with icemaker both use the latest e-touch technology. Pocket doors have been used to hide small appliances. The main preparation area features both a large basin and an energy saving Siemens induction hob. Electrical sockets and USB ports for charging phones, laptops, and iPads installed under the breakfast bar, are the finishing touches that make this a space for modern-day living.
Grand Country Home, Bischopscourt
Designer: Lisl Beresford
Bischopscourt
This Provençal-styled home was styled by one of South Africa’s top Interior Designers, Andrea Graff. The brief was to design an open plan kitchen for a young family of 6 who enjoy cooking and entertaining. Thus the language of this kitchen had to be functional, durable and spatially well planned.
I wanted to capture the essence of Africa through the finishes and also bring into the kitchen some of the natural elements outside, visible through the windows. The bulthaup solid walnut has a natural flowery pattern and this, combined with our durable grey laminate, provided the perfect palette. The kitchen island was placed on a sassy black and white hexagonal custom cut tiled ‘carpet’ ideal for easy-cleaning, after messy meal times.
bulthaup manages to achieve a solid wooden finish with their fine 13mm door thickness by applying a thin layer of stainless steel between the solid wood to keep the door rigid. This ingenious detail prevents natural warping and is the perfect example of their careful consideration and precision which gives our clients years of use and enjoyment in their kitchen.
The finishes were dark and to reduce the weight in the kitchen, I used our wall hung system against the back wall, giving the ergonomically planned space a feeling of ‘lightness’.
The kitchen appliances are easily accessible from the two work stations and can be on display or closed off when the kitchen is not in use.
The overall result is a fully functional, lively family kitchen which retains an elegant furniture feel within the space.
Modern Luxury Living, Bantry Bay
Designer: Veena Kalsi
Bantry Bay
This large modern home sits perched on the mountain with uninterrupted views of the ocean. The architects, Kim Benatar and Sian Fisher, approached me with a very restrained palette of natural materials.
Mindful of respecting their line of thinking, I matched the kitchen backdrop to the off-white walls. The seamless wall of furniture was perfectly suited to incorporating our stunning pocket doors to great effect, thus hiding the sink and coffee area. This allowed the unique bulthaup b3 monobloc island to stand alone, as a sculptural piece in its own right. As the day progresses the light bounces off the island’s aluminium finishes creating its own mood. The different light levels diffuse off the surface to bring out varying characteristics of the bronze aluminium; sometimes glowing, sometimes becoming darker.
The bar area was a real triumph of mixing finishes in a simple yet effective way. By using the bulthaup b2 bench I kept the materials very ‘honest’ – the stainless steel and solid walnut work wonderfully against the monolithic concrete wine wall and the shuttered concrete. The joinery behind this wall was very simple, with a walnut niche to house a wonderful collection of spirits and bar accessories, and there is even a subtle doorway into a storage area.
The result is a fascinatingly modern home full of shifting light patterns and mosaics created by nature’s interaction with the best use of modern materials.
About us
Our Team
Colin Lee
Managing Director
Born in Cape Town, Colin completed his B.Comm degree at UCT and qualified as a Chartered Accountant, working for Ernst & Young in Cape Town and then in the UK. In 2000, after 5 years as a senior finance manager for Canada Life Assurance Company in London, he embarked on an international operatic singing career, becoming only the third South African tenor in history to achieve the “Grand Slam” in opera – to have sung in all of the 5 major opera houses in the world. Now, after 20 years abroad, Colin has returned to South Africa to merge his financial and creative skills at bulthaup.
Ramón Casadó
Design Director
Originally from Barcelona, Ramón has nearly 20 years’ experience designing bulthaup kitchens. He’d be the first to tell you that his enthusiasm and passion for bulthaup has only grown over time. For him it’s been very exciting in South Africa where he’s been designing open, magnificent kitchens that are so in tune with the lifestyle. While design in London or Europe tends to be much more constrained by space, here there is the possibility to create absolutely spectacular kitchens on a scale not usually seen. Ramón has designed both bulthaup showrooms in Europe.
Concepts
Stage 1 – The Initial Brief
Please make an appointment to come and visit one of our designers with your room dimensions and your wish-list for the project. As much information is taken to establish your individual requirements for the space in terms of function, aesthetics and budget. Appliances and finishes will be discussed broadly, but no specific decisions need to be made at this point.
Stage 2 – Presentation of Proposals
During the second meeting in the showroom, your appointed designer will present our proposals for your kitchen with drawings and a guide quotation. This quotation is valid for 14 days.
With a detailed explanation and discussion of the layout, you will gain a clear understanding of our ideas and recommendations together with the rationale behind them.
By the end of the meeting, we hope that you have enough information to decide to proceed to the next stage.
At this point, if you wish us to proceed further by releasing the drawings, amending the designs or arranging site visits, we will ask you for a small financial commitment in the form of an initial design fee. The design fee will be credited against the total cost of the project should you place an order, but it is non-refundable should you decide not to proceed.
Stage 3 – Refining the Design
Once the design fee has been received, we will work with you to refine your design during which time we will be happy to discuss in detail the types of finishes you want, the appliances that best suit your kitchen and we will finalise the layouts with you.
Our surveyor will visit your site to verify our expectations of timing and the preparation of the space and services your contractor will need to provide for the kitchen.
Once the design has been finalised we will issue a Contract of Sale with a fixed quotation. The price we quote you includes the price of the furniture, appliances, worktops, shipping, delivery and a first fix dry fit installation.
Stage 4 – Issuing of Contracts
To confirm an order, a signed Contract of Sale and the specified Deposit payment or Service Drawing Fee will be required. The final detailed service drawings will then be completed and issued to all appropriate parties.
All component parts for the kitchen are placed on order with our suppliers. Delivery of the bulthaup items into our warehouse is approximately 16 weeks from order. There may be seasonal variations.
We aim to take delivery of all parts for your project well before they are required on site. This ensures that we have everything in place to arrive on the designated day to begin installation. Our surveyor will continue to monitor the site to check progress to ensure a smooth and co-ordinated installation process.
An installation date is mutually agreed and continued liaison between our team and your contractors monitors the condition and progress of your site.
As your goods are held in our own storage facility, we are able if necessary, to re-schedule our installation timing to suit delays in your build programme giving maximum flexibility.
The actual installation on site is likely to take between 5 and 10 days depending on the size of the project. During installation, our design team attends site as often as necessary to remain in close contact with our fitters and your contractors to answer any queries that you may have.
We normally recommend that your contractor’s plumber and electrician attend site during the final days of our installation to connect the appliances to the service.
After installation is completed to your satisfaction, our designer will make a visit to offer help and advice on how to maximise the usage of your new kitchen.
Stage 5 – Terms and Conditions
To place an order for a kitchen, you will be asked to sign a Contract of Sale and to pay a deposit, normally 50% of the total value of the project. The remaining balance will be due for payment ten working days prior to the delivery and installation on site, or one month after arrival at our storage facilities, whichever is the earlier. In the event that the kitchen is not required within the next 3- 6 months but the service drawings are required, we may instead require a Service Drawing Fee prior to placing the order, which is normally 10% of the total value of the project.
