The 2016 bulthaup award. Living space and narrative continuity

The jury panel for the “bulthaup | the kitchen as a living space” competition granted the award for its third edition to the RA Apartment project submitted by Francesc Rifé Studio, describing it as “the one with the best overall approach to the living space.”

Upholding the bulthaup brand values: creativity, attention to detail, an aesthetic conception, and the use of sensuous materials. The “bulthaup | the kitchen as a living space” competition, first held in 2014, aims at reinforcing aspects that reflect our brand’s values, such as creativity, attention to detail, an aesthetic conception, and the use of sensuous materials. The award is aimed at architects and designers, and submissions are accepted for projects that have been carried out in the past five years in Spain, Portugal, and Andorra.

Judging submissions according to their overall approach to the living space. The criteria for granting the award are based on an overall approach to the living space and focus on four main aspects: utility value (ergonomics, technique), design quality (function, construction, innovation), the kitchen’s integration within the overall space (design context, look), and success in turning the kitchen into the heart of the home.

The awarded project: Frances Rifé’s RA Apartment. This year, the prize has been granted to Francesc Rifé Studio for its RA Apartment project; the runner-up was Mas Bracons, the project submitted by architects Ramón Colomer and Meritxell Inaraja.

Jury panel. The members of the jury were interior designer Marcos Catalán, architect Marta Peris, architect Jordi Vidal, bulthaup partner Agnès Blanch, bulthaup Iberia Country Manager Ivan Cuní, and bulthaup partner Kati Masferrer. Narrative continuity.

The jury highlighted Francesc Rifé’s skill at creating a unified living space in his project following the four criteria listed above. The panel also valued the narrative flowing between the different spaces within the residence, turning the kitchen into the heart of the home by placing it as a welcoming space between the library and the vertical access area leading to the upper level.

Mutual respect between the old and the new. Concerning the runner-up project submitted by architects Ramón Colomer and Meritxell Inaraja, the jury pointed out “the natural beauty in the treatment of the kitchen as an object that is part of a respectful dialogue between the old and the new.”
